Brewery story

About UnBarred Brewery

UnBarred Brewery was founded in Brighton in 2014 by Jordan Mower, who began brewing from a shed with the aim of creating uncompromising and exciting beer. One of the brewery's earliest successes came when its original flagship IPA won the Bev Robbins Award for Best Sussex Beer during its first year.

As demand grew, UnBarred quickly outgrew its original home and moved into gypsy brewing, producing beer using other breweries' facilities while developing recipes, increasing production and collaborating with fellow independent brewers. This period helped establish the experimental and collaborative approach that continues to shape the brewery today.

In August 2019 UnBarred opened its own brewery and taproom on Elder Place in the heart of Brighton. The move gave the brewery a permanent home in the city and enabled it to significantly increase production while creating a direct connection between the brewhouse, its beers and the local community.

Creativity plays a central role in UnBarred's identity. Alongside its core range, the brewery regularly produces limited-edition beers and collaborations spanning hop-forward pale ales and IPAs, lagers, dark beers and more experimental releases. Its visual identity also reflects Brighton's creative culture, with the brewery frequently working alongside local artists, independent businesses and other creatives.

UnBarred's Brighton taproom has become an important part of the brewery, serving brewery-fresh beer alongside cider, wine and spirits in a relaxed city-centre setting. Today, UnBarred continues to combine adventurous brewing with collaboration and a strong connection to Brighton, while its beers are distributed to drinkers around the UK.
