Independent Windsor brewery founded in 2010 with a mission to restore commercial brewing to the town after an absence of almost 80 years. Windsor & Eton brews from its Vansittart Estate home and combines award-winning beer with an extensive brewery taproom, tours and a growing collection of pubs and bars built around its 'Better Together' community ethos.
Brewery story
Windsor & Eton Brewery was founded in 2010 with a clear local purpose: to bring brewing back to Windsor. The town had once enjoyed a significant brewing tradition, but its last brewery had closed in 1931. Almost 80 years later, a group that included former Courage brewers set out to revive that heritage, establishing a new brewery at the Vansittart Estate close to the centre of Windsor.
The brewery developed around an 18-barrel brewing plant fabricated in Burton, producing beer principally for pubs across London and the Thames Valley while gradually building a much wider audience. Production grew to around 5,000 barrels a year, and investment in its own canning line gave the brewery greater control over packaging and freshness as cans became an increasingly important part of its range.
Over time, Windsor & Eton has evolved into considerably more than a production brewery. Its Windsor site has been developed as a destination in its own right, with The Brewhouse inviting visitors behind the scenes to discover how beer is made and hear the story of brewing's return to the town. Brewery tours form a regular part of that experience, reflecting the company's ambition to make the brewery one of Windsor's attractions rather than somewhere hidden away from the public.
Alongside the brewhouse is Unit 4, the brewery's large taproom. Open seven days a week and capable of holding up to 250 people, it combines a substantial draught beer selection with freshly cooked food, live music, games, sport and regular events. What began as a brewery tap has become a major social space, with the brewery placing the idea of bringing people together at the heart of its identity.
That philosophy now extends beyond the brewery gates. Windsor & Eton operates a collection of pubs and bars including The George in Eton, an eighteenth-century pub overlooking the Thames and Windsor Castle, and WeBrew Kingston at the historic Eagle Brewery Wharf beside the river. Craft Corner provides another outlet at the races during the summer and selected weekends, giving the business a mixture of brewery, taproom, pub and bar experiences.
Community is a recurring theme throughout the business. Under its 'Better Together' philosophy, Windsor & Eton describes beer, food and hospitality as ways of creating places where people can meet and feel welcome. Live music, open-mic nights and charity events sit alongside brewing, while partnerships with charities focus on community connection and mental and physical wellbeing.
From restoring a brewing tradition that had disappeared from Windsor for generations, Windsor & Eton has grown into a brewery and hospitality business with beer still at its centre. Its working brewhouse, busy Unit 4 taproom and collection of venues give drinkers several ways to experience the brewery, while its continued presence at Vansittart Estate keeps the revival of Windsor brewing firmly rooted in the town where it began.
