Founded from a passion for homebrewing in Bristol, Wiper and True has grown into one of the UK's most respected independent breweries, pioneering flavourful, approachable beers while remaining dedicated to its founding pursuit of 'Beautiful Beer.'
Brewery story
Wiper and True began with an apple orchard rather than a brewery. Founders Michael Wiper and Al True originally planned to make cider while waiting for newly planted trees to mature, but their attention soon turned to homebrewing. As they experimented with beer, friends and family were surprised by how much they enjoyed the results, including many who wouldn't normally choose a beer. The brewery's philosophy was born when a family friend tasted one of their early IPAs and declared, 'cor, that's a beautiful beer' – a phrase that would inspire both the brewery's name and its mission.
In the early years, Wiper and True brewed nomadically at other breweries across the UK, constantly experimenting with ingredients, techniques and styles. Their focus on flavour, quality and innovation quickly earned a loyal following in Bristol, leading to the opening of their first dedicated brewery in St Werburghs. Even as demand grew, the brewery remained committed to creating approachable, balanced beers that could appeal to seasoned beer enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Today, Wiper and True brews from its state-of-the-art brewery in Old Market, Bristol, where modern technology, technical precision and sustainability sit alongside the creativity that defined its earliest days. Still independently owned and family-run, the brewery continues its pursuit of 'Beautiful Beer' through every recipe it creates, producing carefully crafted beers that combine innovation, drinkability and exceptional quality.
