Brewery story
Wolf Brewery was founded in 1995 by Wolfe Witham, an experienced Norfolk brewer whose involvement in the region's beer industry dates back to the 1980s. Witham had previously been the driving force behind the Reindeer brewpub in Norwich, a popular destination for real ale enthusiasts during its heyday. Building on this experience, he established Wolf Brewery at the former Gaymers Cider site in Attleborough. The brewery began with a 20-barrel brewing plant and a commitment to producing distinctive East Anglian ales, drawing inspiration from Norfolk's longstanding brewing traditions and the region's reputation for producing high-quality malting barley.
As Wolf's reputation grew, so did demand for its beers. By the mid-2000s, the original premises could no longer accommodate the brewery's expanding operation. In 2006, a significant investment was made in a new 25-barrel brewing plant, increasing production capacity and supporting further growth. The brewery's own history describes this period as including a move to larger premises in Besthorpe, a short distance from Attleborough. CAMRA records the move to its current site at Decoy Farm in 2013. These developments helped establish Wolf as a significant independent producer, supplying pubs and other outlets across Norfolk and beyond.
Wolf Brewery has maintained a strong connection to East Anglia's agricultural heritage throughout its development. The region's extensive barley-growing countryside provides an important foundation for traditional brewing, and Wolf places particular emphasis on local ingredients, established recipes and regional brewing methods. The brewery is also a member of the East Anglian Brewers Co-operative, which supports collaboration between independent producers and local farmers. One of the co-operative's ambitions is to improve ingredient traceability, working towards a system in which the origins of beer can be followed from grain to glass. This commitment reflects Wolf's belief in maintaining a close relationship between brewing and the surrounding countryside.
Alongside its traditional brewing approach, Wolf has continued to invest in modern production and packaging technology. The installation of a dedicated bottling plant expanded the availability of its award-winning ales, allowing customers further afield to enjoy beers previously associated primarily with local pubs and festivals. With distribution to more than 300 outlets, the brewery has developed a substantial presence while retaining its independent identity. Today, Wolf continues to combine the brewing heritage of Norfolk with modern equipment and a focus on quality, producing beers intended to demonstrate the character and craftsmanship of East Anglian brewing.
