Acorn Brewery is an independent brewery established in Barnsley in 2003. Best known for its cask ales, including flagship Barnsley Bitter, the brewery combines South Yorkshire brewing heritage with an extensive programme of seasonal beers and its long-running Single Hopped IPA series.
Brewery story
Acorn Brewery began in 2003 with a second-hand 10-barrel brewing plant from the Forester & Firkin Brew Pub in Stafford. Its first brew, Barnsley Bitter, was produced on 4 July 2003 using the historic Barnsley Brewery yeast strain, which dates back to the 1850s and remains central to Acorn's beers.
Growth led Acorn to move to its current Wombwell premises in 2008, where a 25-barrel brewery increased production capacity while retaining its focus on traditional cask brewing. The brewery now produces six core cask ales alongside regular seasonal and limited-edition releases.
Acorn is also known for its Single Hopped IPA series, which explores individual hop varieties and has grown to more than 170 different IPAs without repeating a hop. Today, the brewery is once again under the ownership of Dave and Christy Hughes and continues to combine its Barnsley brewing heritage with new recipes and experimentation.
