Brewery story

About Abbeydale Brewery

Abbeydale Brewery was founded in Sheffield in 1996 and has grown from its independent beginnings into one of the city's established breweries. Its approach combines brewing heritage and tradition with creativity and innovation, with a house style often characterised by pale, hop-forward beers while embracing an increasingly diverse range of styles.

The brewery has grown steadily over three decades and can now produce more than 220 brewers' barrels each week, with as many as fifteen different beers in production at any one time. At the heart of its range is Moonshine, its award-winning flagship pale ale, which accounts for more than 40% of the brewery's output. Alongside it sits the Brewers Emporium range, including APA Heathen and lager Heresy, as well as the experimental Funk Dungeon barrel-ageing and mixed fermentation programme.

Quality and education play an important role at Abbeydale. The brewery's team are qualified, or working towards qualifications, through the General Certificate in Brewing, giving people across the business an understanding of the brewing process and an opportunity to contribute to recipe development. An in-house sensory analysis panel and laboratory testing support the brewery's focus on consistency and quality.

In October 2024, Abbeydale became 100% employee owned as part of Sheffield Beerworks EOT Ltd, alongside its Fulwood pub The Rising Sun. The brewery continues to supply cask, keg and canned beer to venues and independent retailers across the UK and has regularly exported its beers into Europe since 2020.

Abbeydale expanded its presence in its home neighbourhood with the opening of Abbeydale Beerworks on Abbeydale Road. Located only a short walk from the brewery, the taproom showcases the breadth of Abbeydale's range across cask and keg, including fresh releases and its Funk Dungeon beers, while providing a community space for tastings, events and brewery tours.
