Brewery story
Alfred's Brewery was established in 2012 in the historic Hampshire city of Winchester. Founded by a local brewer named Steve, who had already spent a decade working professionally in brewing, the business began on a modest budget with the ambition of bringing independently brewed beer to his hometown. Named in tribute to Winchester's association with King Alfred the Great, the brewery quickly established itself through traditional English ales and a commitment to quality.
The early years brought both challenges and success, with Alfred's beers earning recognition at local festivals. Saxon Bronze received awards at the Hampshire Beer of the Year competition in 2012 and the Winchester Real Ale and Cider Festival in 2013. Winchester Pale Ale and Gold Wyvern followed with further festival success, helping the young brewery build a reputation among Hampshire's real ale drinkers.
In 2017, Alfred's relocated to larger premises at Winnall Farm Industrial Estate on Easton Lane, close to Winchester city centre. The move introduced a modern, semi-automated 10-barrel brewhouse and increased production capacity threefold. Alongside its established session bitter and pilsner, the brewery continues to produce returning favourites and experimental releases, balancing traditional brewing styles with opportunities to develop new beers.
Environmental responsibility has become an important part of Alfred's identity. The brewery received recognition in the Winchester Business Awards' environmental category in 2019 and 2020, reflecting investments in renewable energy and waste reduction. Its initiatives include powering the steam boiler with renewable gas, installing energy-efficient lighting, reducing water consumption and collecting packaging for recycling. More than a decade after opening, Alfred's remains rooted in Winchester, combining award-winning beer with a commitment to improving how it is brewed.
