Brewery story
Flying Gang Brewing was established in 2021 by friends Steve and Andrew, who shared a passion for traditional ales, craft beer and good food. Based in an industrial unit in Ponteland, a few miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne, the independent microbrewery was created to serve its local community with quality beers and a welcoming place to enjoy them. Steve brought an engineering background and a focus on processes and quality control, while Andrew contributed his experience in law alongside an enthusiasm for developing beer and food recipes. Together, they built a brewery centred on craftsmanship, experimentation and community.
From the outset, Flying Gang aimed to develop its own distinctive beers rather than simply reproduce established recipes. The founders experimented with a variety of styles, selecting their favourites for a permanent core range while continuing to create one-off specials and new releases. Their brewing approach combines traditional ales with contemporary craft styles, with an emphasis on flavour, consistency and careful production. Both founders remain closely involved in the business, with Andrew developing and refining recipes and Steve overseeing the technical and operational aspects of brewing.
The brewery's Ponteland premises also house a weekend taproom, providing a direct connection between Flying Gang and its customers. The bar offers a rotating selection of up to three cask ales and six keg beers, including the brewery's own lager, alongside guest cider, wines and spirits. Food is an important part of the experience, with freshly prepared pizzas made onsite using dough fermented for 48 hours. With indoor and outdoor seating, the taproom has become a community-focused venue where visitors can enjoy beers close to where they are produced.
Flying Gang has extended its presence beyond Ponteland through its involvement with the Left Luggage Room micropub in Monkseaton, where customers can also enjoy its beers. The brewery additionally supplies selected local pubs and bars, helping its traditional ales and specialty brews reach a wider audience across the area. While continuing to develop new recipes and occasional specials, Flying Gang remains focused on its original ambition: producing carefully crafted beer and creating friendly, welcoming places for people to enjoy it.
