Magpie Brewery is an independent Nottingham brewery established in 2006. Its core beers are brewed using British malt and hops, while its Wanderlust range explores ingredients and influences from further afield, supported by a smaller pilot brewery for trials and limited releases.
Brewery story
Magpie Brewery launched in Nottingham in 2006 with a six-barrel brewing plant. Its core range developed around British ingredients, using British malt and hops to produce beers rooted in traditional brewing while allowing room for experimentation elsewhere in the range.
As production grew, Magpie upgraded to a 17.5-barrel brewhouse in 2017. Alongside the main plant, a smaller 2.5-barrel system is used for trials and small-batch beers, giving the brewery greater freedom to develop new recipes without moving away from its established core range.
That experimental side is particularly visible through the Wanderlust range, which looks beyond Britain for inspiration and ingredients. Magpie has also produced beers under the Mardy Bum and Flipside names, creating several distinct strands of beer alongside the main Magpie identity.
In 2019 the brewery added an onsite shop and tap at its Nottingham home, allowing customers to drink and buy beer directly from the brewery. It brought a hospitality element to a business that had grown considerably from its original six-barrel beginnings while keeping production at the centre of the operation.
