Brewery story

About Zapato Brewing

Zapato Brewing was established in 2016 as a small independent brewery, initially producing its beers on a nomadic basis using brewing facilities around Leeds and Manchester. The brewery later found a permanent home at Holme Mills in the Colne Valley, between the villages of Marsden and Slaithwaite in West Yorkshire.

From the outset, Zapato developed a reputation for producing distinctive beers influenced by traditional European brewing styles while applying a modern and experimental approach. Collaboration has also been an important part of the brewery's identity, with collaborative brews forming a regular part of its output.

Zapato's permanent home sits beside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal on the edge of the Yorkshire Pennines. The location reflects the brewery's connection with the surrounding Colne Valley, an area popular with walkers and cyclists and linked by public transport to Huddersfield, Manchester and Leeds.

The brewery's taproom and riverside beer garden have become an important part of Zapato's identity. The tap serves nine keg lines and two cask lines, with Zapato beers joined by carefully selected guest beers, wine, spirits, cocktails and locally roasted coffee. Regular street food, supper clubs and art, film and music events make the venue as much a community gathering place as a brewery tap.

Zapato continues to produce a broad and changing range of beers from its West Yorkshire base, combining traditional influences with contemporary brewing ideas. Its current range includes pale ales, Berliner Weisse-inspired fruit beers and other modern interpretations, while the brewery remains focused on independence, collaboration and its connection to the Colne Valley.
