Brewery story

About Vocation Brewery

Vocation Brewery was founded by John Hickling after he left his job to follow his calling and brew the big, flavourful beers he loved. He found a home for the brewery high above Hebden Bridge in the South Pennines, transforming an old chicken shed around 1,000 feet above sea level into the place where Vocation's beers are brewed.

The brewery's dramatic location has become an important part of its identity. Surrounded by rugged hills, windswept moorland and steep valleys, Vocation sits at the top of England's longest continuous incline, exposed to the changing Pennine weather and supplied with pure, fresh water. That sense of space, freedom and exploration has helped shape both the brewery and the beers it produces.

Vocation's focus is on bold, flavourful beers made for a wide audience, ranging from hop-forward IPAs and rich stouts to crisp lagers and tangy sours. Whatever the style, the brewery aims to create beers with substance, depth and distinctive flavour, with each brew receiving the same attention to craft and quality that defined Vocation from the beginning.
