Wold Top Brewery is an independent, family-owned brewery established in 2003 on a 600-acre farm in the Yorkshire Wolds. Founded by farmers Tom and Gill Mellor, it brews with home-grown malting barley and water drawn from the chalk aquifer beneath the farm, with sustainability at the heart of its approach.
Brewery story
Wold Top Brewery was founded in 2003 by farmers Tom and Gill Mellor as a way of diversifying and sustaining their family farm at Hunmanby Grange in the Yorkshire Wolds. Brewing became a natural extension of the farm, making use of its home-grown malting barley and water drawn from the chalk aquifer beneath the surrounding land.
The brewery has grown into a modern operation producing and packaging its beer entirely onsite, with a 40-barrel brewing plant supporting a range that includes bitters, pale and golden ales, porters and IPAs, including several gluten-free beers. Its packaging facilities also allow Wold Top to provide contract packaging services for other breweries.
Sustainability remains closely connected to both the brewery and the wider 600-acre farm. Two wind turbines installed in 2011 generate around 95% of the site's electricity, while brewing water comes from its own borehole and the brewery continues to explore ways of storing surplus renewable energy for use when generation is lower.
The brewery remains in the family, with Tom and Gill's daughter Kate and her husband Alex joining in 2010 and subsequently taking over its day-to-day running and development. Visitors can experience the working farm brewery through regular guided tours, which run on Tuesday afternoons and selected Saturdays throughout the year.
