About Yorkshire Heart Brewery
Yorkshire Heart Brewery was established in 2011 in the village of Nun Monkton, near York, as part of the family-run Yorkshire Heart vineyard and winery. Brewing has deep roots in the village, with historical records showing that brewsters were producing beer in Nun Monkton as far back as the sixteenth century, and Yorkshire Heart set out to continue that local tradition with a modern independent brewery.
The brewery is managed by co-owner and Head Brewer Tim Spakouskas and operates a 12-barrel brewing plant. Yorkshire Heart combines traditional British brewing influences with modern craft techniques, producing a broad range that includes bitters, pale ales, IPAs, lagers, milds, porters and stouts.
A defining feature of Yorkshire Heart's beers is the water used to brew them. The brewery draws water from its own borehole and natural spring, giving the team direct control over one of beer's most important ingredients. The brewery also places an emphasis on sourcing quality malts from Yorkshire suppliers and producing its beers on site in Nun Monkton.
Every beer produced by Yorkshire Heart is gluten free. Rather than maintaining a separate gluten-free range, the brewery uses a gluten-removal process across its entire beer portfolio, allowing styles ranging from its Blonde pale ale and Liberty Lager to Blackheart Stout and traditional bitters to be enjoyed as gluten-free beers.
The brewery has developed a varied core and seasonal range, including the best-selling Blonde, traditional Hearty Bitter, Blackheart Stout and the distinctive Rhu Bar rhubarb beer. Its beers are produced for cask, keg, bottle and beer-in-a-box formats and have received recognition in CAMRA, SIBA and other beer competitions.
Visitors can experience the brewery through guided tours hosted by Tim, which take guests inside the brewhouse to learn about the ingredients, equipment and brewing process before a tasting session. Yorkshire Heart's brewery sits a short distance from the family's vineyard and visitor facilities, creating a destination centred around both Yorkshire beer and English wine.
As a family business, Yorkshire Heart also places an emphasis on local sourcing and reducing waste. Brewing by-products such as spent grain are passed on for use as livestock feed, while bottling on site helps reduce unnecessary transport. This approach connects the brewery closely with both its rural surroundings and the wider Yorkshire farming community.
