Woodland Brewing is a small independent brewery based in Penistone, South Yorkshire. Established in 2017 by owner and head brewer Dave Hampshaw, the brewery has grown from a home-based operation into a five-barrel brewery producing cask, keg and packaged beer. Its Penistone Tap serves Woodland beers alongside a changing selection of guest releases in the town centre.
Brewery story
Woodland Brewing grew from owner and head brewer Dave Hampshaw's interest in homebrewing. Dave began brewing as a hobby in his garage in 2014, driven simply by a desire to make and drink good beer.
The brewery was established commercially in 2017, initially producing bottled and keg beer on a small scale. Brewing first took place from Dave's residence before the operation moved into dedicated premises in Penistone town centre.
In 2019 Woodland expanded into cask beer, a move that quickly brought recognition through CAMRA awards in the same year. Cans were introduced in 2020, broadening the brewery's packaged range alongside its existing keg and bottled beer.
As demand increased, Woodland outgrew its early two-barrel setup. The brewery moved to larger premises in 2021, with that site subsequently becoming the Penistone Tap, before production moved again in 2022 to a larger brewery nearby.
The current brewery operates a five-barrel system, allowing Woodland to produce a wider range of styles, increase its focus on cask ale and distribute its beer more widely while retaining its small independent character.
Penistone Tap remains the brewery's public-facing venue in the town centre. Its 10 keg lines and 2 cask lines combine Woodland's own beer with guest releases, including regularly changing pale ales, darker beers, sour beer, cider and wheat beer.
The Woodland name takes inspiration from the Whitefaced Woodland, a distinctive sheep breed associated with the Pennine landscape around the brewery's South Yorkshire home.
