Brewery story

About Northern Monk

Northern Monk was founded in Leeds in 2013 by Russell Bisset and Brian Dickson with a mission to create modern British beer inspired by the North. At a time when much of the UK's craft beer scene looked overseas for inspiration, they set out to brew beers that reflected Yorkshire's heritage, landscape and culture.

The brewery's beginnings were remarkably modest. After Russell's grandmother sold her home, she gifted each grandchild £5,000, providing the seed funding that helped launch Northern Monk. Brewing started from a damp cellar in Leeds with the ambition of producing world-class beer while staying true to the brewery's 'Fresh From The North' philosophy.

Northern Monk quickly gained a reputation for hop-forward pale ales, IPAs and stouts, while embracing creativity through its Patrons Project, an ongoing series of collaborations with breweries, artists, chefs and musicians. The project has become a showcase for experimental brewing and Northern creativity.

Alongside brewing, Northern Monk has invested heavily in its local community through the Northern Monk Foundation and initiatives supporting independent businesses, charities and grassroots organisations. Its Refectory venues have become destinations for craft beer, food and events, reflecting the brewery's belief that beer should bring people together.

Today, Northern Monk is regarded as one of Britain's leading independent breweries, producing award-winning beers enjoyed across the UK and internationally while continuing to champion Yorkshire, collaboration and innovation.
